There is a small village, Balan, in northern Haiti, about 45-minutes outside Cap Haitian, that hasn’t had a medical clinic for over 7 years. The villagers have to travel by moped, tap tap or go by foot to a neighboring village if they are sick. Many times this prevents people from receiving medical care. Brown Horse Projects has been invited by the village leaders and has an opportunity to partner with a local doctor and staff to open a much-needed clinic in this village.
The urgency and timing of this clinic becomes more important every day. Haiti has experienced widespread, violent and unpredictable demonstrations for several months. Political riots have erupted throughout the country, but mainly in both the capital city Port-au-Prince and Cap Haitian. Our teams have been unable to travel as planned due to this political unrest. At the time of writing this blog the US State Department Travel Advisory remains a Level 4: Do Not Travel. It saddens me to read about the turmoil in a country that is so very near and dear to our hearts, but we believe that the opportunity this clinic offers is a tangible, affordable, long-term way for us to help empower the Haitian people with tools, supplies and medications they need to help their fellow countrymen in a dire situation.
About the clinic: we are excited to share that we have been offered use of space in the village community center two days per week. The clinic will provide quality, family medical care by an experienced Haitian physician, fellow Christian and friend Dr. Roosevelt Pierre. We’ve had the pleasure of working with him for several years. The building is in a central location in the village near the school and road.
The capital campaign to open the clinic is still underway, we’re 2/3 of the way to our goal of $38,000. Our estimate is that it will cost $2500/month to operate the clinic once it is open. We are confident that God will bring the funding necessary to make this vision a reality. We already hear the sounds of voices lifted in praise to the King as patients wait for healing. Can you? We feel the touch of a steady loving hand, holding a body to comfort another as Christ has done for us. Can you? We see the art on the walls of the medical clinic created by village children in response to the Gospel message. Can you?
