Friends, the need is great. Just a 4-hour flight from Miami will take you to the island of Hispaniola, home to some of the most beautiful, hard-working, humble, kind and tenacious people. Despite desperate circumstances in both countries, on the east the Dominican Republic, on the west Haiti, our neighbors persevere, cling to the hope of the Gospel and teach us at each visit to do the same.
In Haiti:

The average annual salary is $1420.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with 60% of the population living under the national poverty line.

60% of the Haitian population lives on less than $2 per day.

There is widespread unemployment, as more than 2/3 of the labor force does not have jobs.

There is a widespread lack of access to food. Due to high food prices, natural disasters, sociopolitical turmoil, and worsening insecurity about 4.7 million people are projected to face acute food insecurity (2023).

Life expectancy among women is 69 years and men 63 years, compared to 83/78 years respectively in the US.

Physician density is 0.23 physicians per 1,000 population (2018), compared to 2.61 in the US.

The degree of risk for major infectious diseases is very high (2023).

In the Dominican Republic:

Unauthorized migration and smuggling from impoverished and unstable Haiti has led to occasional border tensions and increased security by the Dominican Republic, including the construction of a fence and the deployment of military troops. Immigrants from Haiti living in the DR are often treated poorly.

21% of the DR population lives under the national poverty line.

Life expectancy among women is 73.5 years and men 70 years, compared to 83/78 years respectively in the US.
