A Story of Hope: BHP Medical Clinic Haiti’s Impact

by Dr. Pierre & Katie Swain

In a world often plagued by challenges, there are moments that remind us why we do what we do. Such moments shine brightly through the work of BHP Medical Clinic Haiti, where every day is a testament to the power of compassion and perseverance.

One of the vital services provided by the dedicated staff at BHP Medical Clinic Haiti is pregnancy testing. This seemingly routine test took a remarkable turn this September when a mother of five came in for a check-up and received unexpected news: she was pregnant once again.

For most, providing for one person in Haiti is a daunting task, but the prospect of supporting five children is most certainly exponentially overwhelming. Faced with this burden, the mother made a heart-wrenching decision, declaring to the clinic's staff, "Doctor, I will not keep this one."

Dr. Pierre couldn't bear to see the mother make such a painful choice. He urged her, "No, don't do that." He was determined to help her see that every life is precious. The mother went on to share her desperate attempts to end her pregnancy, revealing that she had resorted to drinking tea and taking street medicine in an effort to terminate the pregnancy.

Despite her efforts, the baby remained. This revelation only strengthened Dr. Pierre's resolve to support her. After the baby's delivery, the mother returned to the clinic, her heart softened by the experience. She approached Dr. Pierre and asked if he would be the baby's Godfather. This request was a testament to the profound impact of his encouragement and support during her darkest moments.

This story serves as a poignant reminder that even in the face of trials and difficulties, the work carried out by BHP Medical Clinic Haiti is invaluable. There are times when doubt may creep in, when we wonder if our efforts are truly making a difference, or if they are worth the struggle. In those moments of doubt, we cling to two fundamental truths, as highlighted by a dear friend experienced in running mission organizations in Haiti, Africa, and El Salvador:

  • Work unto the Lord. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. Col 3:23-24

  • Every life matters. If just one life is positively impacted by the work we are called to do, all the struggles, sacrifices, and challenges become worthwhile.

This child serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that through unwavering dedication, even in the most trying circumstances, we can make a profound difference in the lives of those we serve.

Thank you to the entire clinic staff for your service, faithfulness, dedication and for sharing this miracle birth with the Brown Horse family. God bless!
